On February 17th, 2021 I’ll will be leading a tabletop exercise for the students of CISS 471 at Western Washington University. The tabletop exercise explores the ethical decisions associated with a ransomware attack at a fictional international organization.

I know some people don’t like it when you talk about milestones like this, but I’m doubly excited for this one because I finally get to publish my interview with Kayne McGladrey from Integral Partners. I know many of your have been scrambling to finish up the quarter or fiscal year, depending on your industry, so hopefully this will give you an opportunity to sit back, relax, and listen to the excellent information that Kayne provided.
A security automation tool allows people to focus on the more interesting threats — those alerts that have passed a threshold that the automation algorithms can’t sufficiently remediate, or where closing the threat might alert the adversary to a forensic investigation. This is the type of work that security teams enjoy — actively hunting for adversaries and ethically engaging before cleaning up the damages and closing any observed vulnerabilities that were exploited.
McGladrey, whose work focuses on identity and access management, leads a team that assists clients in multiple industries. The focus: insider and outsider threats on non-privileged or privileged credentials. McGladrey said that technology has matured so much, that overall cyber security is not about software installation.
